The Brother SE1900 is a computerized sewing and embroidery machine. This versatile machine has 138 built-in embroidery designs and 240 built-in sewing stitches. It also includes 11 different fonts; 7 English fonts, 3 Japanese fonts, and 1 Cyrillic font. These are great for monogramming your project or adding a witty saying. There are also 10 different frames and 14 different borders. You can easily import even more designs and stitches via the USB port. This machine also has the My Custom Stitch feature, which lets you design your own custom sewing stitches and save them to the machine. Being able to add more embroidery designs and stitches makes this machine great for future use.

The SE1900 embroidery machine has a large, full color LCD screen. This screen is 3.2″. You can also interact with your designs fully via the LCD screen. Stretch, rotate, mirror, and reposition your designs easily. Swap out all of the colors on the screen for the colors you will be using. Then preview your designs before sewing a stitch. This lets you quickly and easily know exactly what you will be sewing and in what colors.

This combination machine has a large, 5″x7″ embroidery hoop that lets you work on larger projects with ease. You can also buy smaller hoops, or specialized frame shapes for things like socks and hats for this machine. This lets you work on projects of all different sizes with this embroidery machine.

Included with the 240 built-in sewing stitches are multiple standard, stretch, and decorative stitches. There are also 10 different styles of 1-step buttonholes. I love 1-step buttonholes, they are so nice and convenient, especially compared to sewing button holes by hand!

This machine sews at a quick 850 stitches per minute. This means your projects get done faster than most average sewing machines. This speed is competitive with the best sewing machines! It also comes with Brother’s 25 year limited warranty. Brother at your side support is also included for troubleshooting and basic tech support. Often, this can save you a trip to the repair shop.

Brother SE1900 Review

Now for the Brother SE1900 review. This Brother sewing and embroidery machine has more built-in stitches than the Brother SE650 did previously. It also lets you import designs via USB if needed, which can be convenient. The LCD screen is great because of how large it is and how easy to use all of its features are. I love the ability to rotate, mirror, stretch, and combine designs on the large LCD screen and see exactly what your project will look like before sewing a stitch.

This Brother SE1900 review highlights what’s great about the Brother SE1900 sewing and embroidery machine. It has a large LCD screen, a fast sewing speed of 850 stitches per minute, 138 built-in designs, 240 built in stitch patterns, 10 buttonhole styles, 11 fonts, 14 borders/frames and more! This machine even comes with a knee lifter for the presser foot. This feature is super common in industrial grade machines. This is an excellent computerized embroidery machine for beginners or experienced sewers alike. It is fast becoming Brother’s best embroidery machine that can also sew.

All in all I’d say the Brother SE1900 delivers an excellent value. The Brother SE1900 compares favorably with similar machines on the market today in its price range that offer some of these same perks.

Commonly asked questions about the Brother SE1900 Sewing and Embroidery Machine

Can the Brother SE1900 sew and embroider?

Yes! The Brother SE1900 is a combo machine, capable of both sewing and embroidering. It comes with 138 built-in embroidery designs and 240 built-in sewing stitches. This is a super versatile Brother sewing machine that can also let you realize your embroidery dreams.

Does the Brother SE1900 have automatic needle threading?

Yes! The Brother SE1900 comes with automatic needle threading. This means no more straining your eyes to try to get the needle threaded. Simply run the thread through the machine to the automatic needle threader, press the threader, and you are good to sew!

Can the Brother SE1900 automatically cut stitches?

Yes, this combination sewing and embroidery machine can automatically cut stitches. However, these are only sewing stitches. It cannot automatically cut jump stitches. Jump stitches are the long stitches a machine takes between sections of an embroidery design that are the same color. So you would need to cut the jump stitches.

Can I add my own embroidery designs?

Yes, you can add your own embroidery designs with the Brother SE1900. This machine has a built-in USB port for importing your own designs. These designs do need to be in the .PES format for the machine to support them. So this means any images you wanted to use would need to be converted first. This machine does not come with the software to convert images into embroidery files, and the software can be quite expensive. So for most designs you would want to buy them from a trusted retailer. I usually recommend iBroidery for purchasing new embroidery designs.

Does the Brother SE1900 come with software to make embroidery designs?

No, the Brother SE1900 does not come with the software needed to make your own embroidery designs. This software would have to be purchased separately, or you can buy designs that others have made and import those onto your machine.

If you are interested in buying designs others have made, check out iBroidery and Etsy. iBroidery is Brother’s site dedicated to custom embroidery machine designs, and Etsy has a great collection of embroidery designs created by individuals too. Be careful when downloading and adding designs onto your machine. Make sure that you only use trusted designs.

Can I use metal bobbins with the Brother SE1900?

No! You do not want to use metal bobbins with the Brother SE1900. Metal bobbins would damage the machine, leading to costly repairs that are out of warranty. Be sure to use the correct plastic bobbins for this combination sewing and embroidery machine.

Can the Brother SE1900 do free arm sewing?

Yes! The Brother SE1900 can do free arm sewing. Simply remove the presser foot storage area from the bottom of the machine and you are good to go. Free-arm sewing is great for sewing smaller and hard to reach areas. It allows you to wrap your project around the sewing machine easily. This makes quick work of hemming pants, finishing sleeve cuffs, sewing necklines, or making doll clothes.

Does the Brother SE1900 have a max speed setting?

Yes! The Brother SE1900 has an adjustable max sewing speed. Being able to adjust the max sewing speed down makes this machine much easier to use for beginner sewers. This means that even if a new sewer presses down all the way on the foot pedal, the machine won’t run away with their sewing project. Being able to adjust the speed down is also great for computerized sewing machines like this that have a stop and start button. If you are not used to controlling a machine via a button, and are instead used to using a foot pedal, being able to slow down the machine while you are learning can be invaluable.

What’s different between the Brother SE1900 vs SE650?

The Brother SE1900 and SE650 are very similar machines. That said, there are a few basic differences. First, the Brother SE1900 comes with more built-in stitches and embroidery designs. It sews faster than the SE650 and has a knee lift. It also supports a larger embroidery hoop.

And with it’s large LCD screen you can view the onboard tutorials easily to remind you how to use lesser used features.

Yes, the Brother SE1900 can be good for business use. It would make an excellent choice for a small embroidery business or to embroider company logs onto hats or shirts. It would even be great for a home business sewing designs onto items to be sold on Etsy. I would not put this machine to work as an industrial embroidery machine.

Does the Brother SE1900 have variable speed control?

Yes! The Brother SE1900 has variable speed control. Variable speed control is useful for regular sewing. It lets you control the max sewing speed of the machine. This is a great way to let people who are newer to sewing get adjusted to the machine. If they slam down on the foot controller, the sewing machine will not run away with their project. If you spend much time sewing, the variable speed control also lets you speed up the machine – allowing you to complete projects faster!

Is the Brother SE1900 good for beginners?

The Brother SE1900 has many features that make it a good sewing machine for beginners. It has the ability to reduce the maximum sewing speed, making it easier for beginner sewers to learn from. You can view tutorials and guides right on the machine’s large color touch display screen, making it easy to remember how to thread or setup the machine. The ability to view the tutorials right on the machine adds a lot to it’s ease of use. The machine has automatic tension settings, making it even easier for new sewers to get up and going.

Many of the features in this machine will be more than a new sewer needs for quite a while, but this means that the machine can grow with the sewer’s skill. This Brother embroidery machine is good choice for a new sewer or new machine embroiderer.

Does the Brother SE1900 come with a case?

No, the Brother SE1900 does not come with a case. Most other Brother embroidery machines come with a soft dust cover – but that is not the case with the Brother SE1900. You would either need to buy or make a case / dust cover for this Brother embroidery machine.

Can you embroider multiple colors at once with the Brother SE1900?

The Brother SE1900 computerized embroidery machine can only embroider one color at a time. If you are looking for a machine that can embroider more than one color at a time, you would want a commercial embroidery machine. Check out our reviews of some great commercial embroidery machines for home use.

What other items do I need to embroider?

To successfully embroider, you should also pick up some embroidery thread and stabilizer. This embroidery thread will not be like the hanks of embroidery thread that you can see in craft stores. You will want embroidery thread on spools so they can be used with your embroidery machine. Machine embroidery thread is more glossy than normal sewing thread. It is made of slightly different materials (often rayon or polyester) from your normal cotton sewing thread. It is also spun as 2-ply threads, so is not able to stretch or endure rubbing as well as normal sewing thread. You *can* embroider with normal sewing thread, but your embroidery will not be as vibrant and glossy. Also, you may have issues with the thread flowing correctly to create the design. Getting the appropriate embroidery thread to create your embroidery with is highly recommended.

There is not a specific “Brother SE1900 embroidery thread”, any embroidery thread would work in this machine. That said, Sulky is a good common brand of embroidery thread. You will also want to be sure to use stabilizer with all of your embroidery projects. This will help to ensure that your embroidery comes out smooth and even by providing some extra body to the fabric. If you get tear away stabilizer, you can remove it easily after your embroidery design is completed.

In summary

In conclusion to my Brother SE1900 review, I think this product would make a lovely gift for someone who loves crafting. In fact it might be the perfect Christmas present if you’re shopping on a budget! There aren’t many embroidery machines that have all these features at such an affordable price point either – which makes this one extra special indeed.

  1. Hi! I am considering the SE1900 to replace my Viking Husqvarna computerized Platinum 775. The majority of my sewing is making women’s clothing. Lots of buttonholes and my current machine has a computerized buttonhole foot. I’d like to start some embroidering and am hoping to try my hand at making a wedding veil for my daughter with some embroider. All of my sewing is personal, not business based. Roughly 80% of my projects would be sewing. How would you rate this machine for just sewing?
    Thanks

    • My main sewer is a super old “White” machine that I inherited from my great grandmother, so I can’t speak to durability much. For actual sewing action, the SE1900 is great! A couple of things if you do decide to go with the SE1900:

      • Make sure to buy a new model, not refurbished (only new has the Brother 25 year limited warranty)
      • Make sure to buy from a licensed Brother dealer (only Brother dealers will have the 25 year limited warranty)
      • Finding a compatible USB stick for transferring patterns and stitches can be a hassle
      • Thank you. Those are good points. My issue is probably going to be finding a dealer in my city who has the SE1900. Fingers crossed.
