Brother HC1850 Details
The Brother HC1850 is a computerized sewing and quilting machine. This machine includes 185 built in stitches. These include 130 different sewing stitches and heirloom stitches, 8 different one-step auto buttonhole stitches, and 55 alphanumeric character stitches. These stitches are printed right on the machine and can easily be selected with the buttons on the machine and the backlit LCD. These stitches have pre-programmed stitch length and widths, or you can adjust the stitch length and stitch width to customize your stitch. This gives you a lot of different choices for how to decorate your projects, and even allows you to add some easy monogramming. It has an easy to use automatic needle threader, automatic bobbin winding, and a drop-in top bobbin. So getting up and sewing is truly easy.
This machine also has an automatic reverse button, needle up / down position button, and a stop / start button. I love having a needle up/ down button for turning sharp corners with decorative stitching. Not having to walk the machine to get the needle down is very nice. This machine also comes with a max speed slider. This feature is super useful for beginner sewers. It allows you to set a reduced max stitch speed for the machine. That way no matter how hard the foot pedal is stepped on, the machine will only go so fast. This machine sews at a quick 850 max stitches per minute, so being able to throttle the speed for beginners is really useful. For advanced sewers, the quick sewing speed means that you can get you projects done even faster.
This Brother sewing machine also comes with a quilting table attachment. This attachment extends your working space, allowing you to easily move larger projects and quilts around. This machine also comes with a spring action quilting foot, but it does not include a walking foot. It can do drop feed sewing allowing you to create beautiful freehand quilting or you can use any of the decorative built in stitches. This machine also comes with Brother at your side support and a 25 year limited warranty.

Brother HC1850 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine Review
The Brother HC1850 sewing machine is a computerized sewing and quilting machine. This machine is quite capable of both quilting and doing day to day sewing. This is not a heavy duty sewing machine, but that doesn’t stop it from being able to sew a few layers of denim or canvas. Perfect for hemming jeans. It comes with tons of decorative stitches including basic monogramming capabilities. The ease of use with this machine and the adjustable sewing speed make it a great choice for beginners, and all of the options make it great for a more advanced sewer as well.
Brother HC1850 Sewing and Quilting Machine FAQ
What size bobbin does the Brother HC1850 use?
The Brother HC1850 uses SA156 class 15 bobbins, found here.
Can you use metal bobbins in the Brother HC1850?
No, you can not use metal bobbins with the Brother HC1850. Doing so would void your warranty and cause costly damages.
Can you quilt with the Brother HC1850?
The Brother HC1850 is a great machine for quilting! It has a ton of decorative stitches and quilting stitches for adding designs to your quilt. It also comes with a handy detachable wide table which makes it much easier to work with large projects. This machine also comes with a spring loaded quilting foot, just for quilting! Quilting projects that are super large might be difficult with this machine, as the throat is not overly large. King or queen size quilts might be hard to pass through the machine.
Can you sew denim with the Brother HC1850?
The Brother HC1850 can sew a few layers of denim. It would be able to hem jeans but may struggle to sew over multiple layers of denim (such as jean hems). This is not a heavy duty machine, so would not be a good choice if you were looking for a good sewing machine for leather, or sewing lots of denim or canvas projects. One of the heavy duty sewing machines like a Singer heavy duty would be a better choice if you were sewing a lot of leather, canvas, denim, or thick fabrics.
Can you embroider with the Brother HC1850?
With the Brother HC1850 you can create beautiful free motion embroidery. Free motion embroidery is where you drop the feed dogs completely and move the fabric around in the sewing machine to create designs. You can also use this feature to do free-motion quilting, creating beautiful designs on your quilt. There are also a ton of different stitch options that you can combine to create beautiful designs. This machine is not a computerized embroidery machine, so it cannot do embroidery of images on it’s own. It can embroider 55 different alphanumeric characters, so if you are wanting to do monogramming this machine would be able to do that automatically with the included sewing font.
Does the Brother HC1850 come with a walking foot?
No, the Brother HC1850 does not come with a walking foot. A walking foot is great presser foot for sewing multiple layers of fabric together (such as a quilt). It keeps the layers aligned evenly as it sews, preventing them from shifting. You can find a walking foot for the Brother HC1850 here.
Does the Brother HC1850 come with a case?
No, the Brother HC1850 does not come with a case. If you want a case for this machine, you would need to purchase it separately.

What is a computerized sewing machine?
A computerized sewing machine is a sewing machine that has a computer for controlling setting the machine settings. They often have buttons and sliders that you can use to adjust the settings, with the computer translating that into changes. This is different from a mechanical sewing machine that has knobs, levers, and buttons that you use to control the machine settings directly. Mechanical sewing machines and computerized sewing machines are both great sewing machine types.
